The Doors, Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)

I like to think I am pretty knowledgeable Doors fan, but this one snuck up on me.

‘Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)’ off of The Doors first album was a song from the late 1920s, also set to a 1930s German opera (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny). Never knew that.

In turn, Morrison did change some of the lyrics, delete others as well as changing the original phrase “show me the way to the next whiskey boy” to “whiskey bar” and “little girl”.

Here is a version of the 1920s sang by Lotte Lenya. She was married to Kurt Weill, who wrote this song.

David Bowie gave his best shot at the original as well …

Here is The Doors version, circa 1969 concert, with Jim looking pretty rough.
